‘Cork king’ Américo Amorim (pictured) has again been named the richest person in Portugal, with a fortune estimated at €3.15 billion, according to Forbes magazine.

The 2013 Forbes Billionaires list places the Corticeira Amorim boss in 316th position (down 74 places on last year). The entrepreneur retains the lead in the ranking of Portugal’s richest people, followed by Pingo Doce boss Alexandre Soares dos Santos, who, according to Forbes, has a fortune valued at €2.31 billion (ranking in 458th position – up 33 places on last year) and Belmiro de Azevedo, Continente boss, with a net worth of €1.12 billion. Occupying 1,024th place on the list, Belmiro moved up 129 places.

Carlos Slim Helú (Telecom/Mexico) is the richest person in the world, with a fortune of €55.9 billion, followed by Bill Gates (Microsoft) with €51.3 billion and Amancio Ortega (Zara, Spain) in third place with a net worth of €43.6 billion.

Liliane Bettencourt (L’Oreal, France) is the world’s richest woman, with a fortune valued at €29 billion and occupying 9th place in the ranking.

According to Forbes magazine, the ranks of the world’s billionaires have again reached all-time highs, both in terms of the number of billionaires (1,426) and record net worth (€4.1 trillion). This year 210 new people have joined the billionaires’ ranks.
