Convicted paedophile suspected of relapse

A CONVICTED paedophile who worked at Portimão Câmara was arrested on February 12 by the Polícia Judiciária on suspicion of sexually abusing  a 10-year-old girl last summer.

Portuguese national daily newspaper Correio da Manhã reported that the Portuguese man, aged around 30, was arrested at 9am by the PJ at his parents’ house in Ferragudo, Lagoa.

A computer and DVDs containing child pornography were found in the suspect’s bedroom after the PJ were issued a search and arrest warrant by Portimão court judge, Pedro Frias.

At around midday, the suspect was accompanied to his work place where PJ inspectors searched his personal locker, before taking him for questioning  at the police station.

That afternoon, the suspect allegedly admitted to the two counts of abuse against the minor and was later released.

The following day, the Public Ministry at Portimão court ordered that the suspect report to a police station at regular intervals while awaiting a court date.

Some three years ago, the suspect served a three-and-a-half year sentence for abusing an eight-year-old girl, before returning to his job in the construction and general services department of Portimão Câmara.

When contacted by The Resident, a spokesman for the Polícia Judiciária said: “We can confirm that we detained the suspect, but cannot reveal any details as the investigation is still ongoing.”

A spokesman at Portimão Câmara told The Resident that the man did work there but refused to comment further.
