Convicted murderer sues Portuguese State for inhuman conditions in Coimbra jail

Hugo Casaca has won a case against the Portuguese State over the miserable conditions in Coimbra jail. According to a short text today in Correio da Manhã, the 37-year-old, serving a maximum (25 year) sentence for murder, has seen the Court of Human Right rule that yes, the conditions under which Casaca was held in the jail at the time he made his complaint (in April 2022) were “inhuman”, and the food was indeed of “bad quality”. Casaca has seen judges award him €10,800. When he gets to spend the money however is unclear. According to online diarioleiria he only entered jail, for a murder committed in 2009, in 2022 – so there is still a long way to go.
