Controversy marks opening of Banif inquiry

Controversy marked the opening of the parliamentary inquiry into the resolution of Banif Bank on Tuesday.

First, documentation requested from the Bank of Portugal was being held up – on the basis that governor Carlos Costa wanted “guarantees of professional secrecy” from MPs, and second the commission ‘forgot’ to contact former finance minister Vítor Gaspar – even though he has been billed as being one of the key figures to be quizzed.
