THE LENA Group, based in Leiria, central Portugal, has won the international contest to construct a new sporting complex in Portimão.
The Lena Group beat off opposition from fellow finalists The Amorim Group and Alexandre Alves, for the contract and envisage constructing a 90 hectare development, including an Olympic sized swimming pool, a 8,500 capacity football stadium, an indoor sports pavilion and a botanical garden.
Before work can begin the Group must present their plans to the Municipal Assembly of Portimão, the Commisão a Coordenação e Desenvolvimento Regional Algarve (CCDR-Alg) and finally the Council of Ministers, a process likely to take up to a year.
Once approved, the Lena Group estimates the project will take three years and believe the complex will not be ready before 2011.
