Portugal’s Food and Economic Safety Authority (ASAE) has seized 100.5 million euros worth of illegal material and made 2,777 arrests in the four years it has been in existence.
The statistics were released by the Ministry of Economy, Innovation and Development (MEID) to coincide with World Consumer Rights Day on March 15.
The ASAE marked the day with an operation called ‘Protected Consumer’ when more than 1,000 vehicles were inspected across the country by 200 ASAE inspectors, resulting in 10 cases of misdemeanour. In the Algarve, 118 vehicles were inspected and two cases of misdemeanour were registered, according to MEID.
The operation targeted transportation companies in 13 cities and involved hundreds of agents from the GNR and PSP.
