Last week marked the start of construction of a new 3km bike lane that will link Castro Marim and Vila Real de Santo António along the EN122 road while also providing access to the local marsh natural reserve.
The path aims to not only make it easier for cyclists to travel between the two towns but also attract more tourists to the Lower Guadiana area.
“Most of our visitors are seniors who appreciate nature, like to ride bikes and get away from the sun and beach tourism concept, so we have to expand our options by taking advantage of the municipality’s other assets such as the Reserva Natural do Sapal”, said Castro Marim mayor Francisco Amaral.
The project is backed by the CRESC Algarve 2020 funding programme, which will cover 70% of its costs.
