A further €1.5 billion may be needed to pay off unemployment benefits to more than 177,000 construction sector workers, who are at risk of losing their jobs this year. The announcement came from the Association of Construction and Public Works Companies (AECOPS) in Portugal, which states the scenario is very likely if the government does not take action to help the sector. Around 15 construction companies close down each day, while around 10,000 people in the sector lose their jobs every month.
