Concert celebrates life of Portuguese pianist

Four concerts by the Lagos Music Academy’s Classic Orchestra to celebrate the life and music of Portuguese pianist and composer Bernardo Sassetti are being held in the Algarve.

Performances will take place at the TEMPO in Portimão on September 27, at the Centro Cultural de Lagos on September 28, at the Teatro das Figuras in Faro on October 1 and at the Lagoa Municipal Auditorium on October 12, all starting at 9.30pm.

Sassetti, who sadly died after falling from a cliff in Guincho, near Lisbon, in May 2012, will be remembered through his musical pieces, including one he composed at the request of the Lagos Music Academy in 2006.

The piece is called ‘Concerto Dinâmico para dois Pianos e Orquestra’ and will be performed by pianists Elena Tsouranova and João Luís Rosa and the Academy’s Classic Orchestra, under the direction of maestro Armando Mota.

The performance by the Lagos orchestra is described as a “rare opportunity” to listen to Bernardo Sassetti’s ‘Concerto Dinâmico para dois Pianos e Orquestra’ for the first time.

“It is indeed the only repertoire written by this composer for two pianos and orchestra,” said organisers. “The Lagos Music Academy joins International Music Day celebrations by remembering one of the most emblematic Portuguese composers of his generation.” Tickets cost €6 in Portimão and €10 at the other venues.
