English classes are to become mandatory for third and fourth grade students.
The announcement came from Education Minister Nuno Crato, who revealed the measure will come into force in the 2015/2016 school year.
It will be introduced gradually with only third graders attending the classes in 2015.
However, the minister said the details are still being analysed and worked on.
