Media watchdog Ofcom has received nearly 4,000 letters of complaint after Dannii Minogue’s “gay” comments to a contestant on the X Factor.
Dannii, who is a judge on the show, caused upset to viewers by referring to contestant Danyl Johnson’s sexuality after his performance on the first live show on Saturday October 10.
Dannii made the comment: “If you’re to believe everything you read in the papers, then you didn’t need to change the gender references in the song.”
Danyl sung And I’m Telling You by Jennifer Hudson.
Dannii has since apologised, including on the live show the following night. She said Danyl is an “openly bisexual guy” and “wasn’t offended or upset by my comments.” Although claiming it was meant to be a “humorous moment”, fellow judge Simon Cowell accused her of “playing games” and said “I’m not having that. This guy sang his heart out”, in protest to her remarks.
Danyl has accepted Dannii’s apology. Ofcom have said they will not be investigating the matter despite complaints.
