Complaint against obstetrician who missed ‘baby without face’ archived

The criminal case brought by the parents of little Rodrigo, the baby born ‘without a face’ after various antenatal visits with obstetrician Artur Carvalho has been archived. The Public Ministry explains there is no proof of criminal responsibility. What the judge did say was that there had been a violation of the right to choose whether or not to have the birth in the first place – bearing in mind the developing baby’s profound deformities. The case exposed a number of complaints against the doctor, all from parents whose children had been born with issues that he failed to detect (click here). It’s understood Artur Carvalho, who was struck off by the general medical council last year, has now retired.
