Community joins forces for seven-year-old cancer victim

Several fundraising events are planned in the Western Algarve in a bid to raise money for Salvador, a seven-year-old boy from Odiáxere, Lagos who is fighting a “very aggressive” form of cancer.

A “boy with a huge passion for football”, Salvador was diagnosed three months ago with stage four “intramedullary glioblastoma” for which his parents Miguel Schuster and Sofia Rodrigues Lopes were told there is no cure in Portugal.

The pair are committed to finding treatment abroad “as fast as possible”.

To help them, several local companies and institutions have organised fundraisers.

On Saturday (September 17), donations will be accepted during a friendly ‘futsal’ (indoor football) match between Portimonense and Burinhosa that begins at 6.30pm at Portimão’s Gimnodesportivo.

On the same day, Zen Trekk is holding a charity hiking event starting at 4.30pm at the urban park near the Estrela Desportiva football stadium in Bensafrim, Lagos.

A day later, Lagos’ mini-golf course Pro Putting Garden will be donating all of its proceeds of the day to the cause, while NaturBoticae, an alternative medicine clinic in the town, will also be giving the proceeds from its bookings on Monday, September 26.

School tutorials company Explica-me has followed up with a pledge to offer all income from its October 17 classes to the drive.
