Community helping heroes

A fish and chip supper was held on October 21 at the Cockerel Country Kitchen restaurant in Albufeira with funds raised being donated to the Help for Heroes charity fund.

More than 50 guests at the event enjoyed fish flown in from Whitby and Inverness for a traditional fish supper while entertainment was provided by Sax and Son and belly dancers.

Captain Chris Hotchkiss from the 1st Battalion Royal Ghurkha Riffles, based at the Sir John Moore Barracks in Folkestone, attended the event and spoke to guests about the experiences of the Ghurkhas during his time in Afghanistan.

Meanwhile, an auction, including a box of wine from the Adega do Cantor winery, CDs from Kiss Fm, polo and t-shirts from the Royal Marines and a cake in the logo of Help for Heroes, was also held during the evening with the total amount raised on the night exceeding 1,200 Euros.

Organiser Carole Good-Dixon said: “Thanks to all those who attended and made this such a memorable evening.  There were over 30 people on the waiting list for the event and we will try to repast it again in February.”

She added: “This is such an important charity and reminds us all that at this time of year we need to remember the Poppy Appeal and the wonderful work undertaken by the Royal British Legion.”
