Coffee crisis

AN ESPRESSO coffee, or bica, considered an integral part of Portuguese culture, is set to rise in price and could cost as much as one euro.

The average cost of a bica in Portugal is 55 cêntimos and the new price will reflect the increase in world grain costs rising by 30 per cent.

José Manuel Esteves of the national association of restaurants (ARESP) said: “The inflation in the price of coffee has been caused by speculation and nothing else.”
