AN AGREEMENT has been reached in Brussels enabling Portuguese fishermen to up their quotas of Norwegian codfish, or bacalhau.
The bi-lateral agreement has been reached with Norway and will come into force in 2008.
Portuguese fishermen will be able to catch more cod but less frog-fish, while maruca fishing, a white fish similar to cod, has been cut by 13 per cent, mackerel by nine, and Norwegian lobster down by five per cent.
The new agreement has penalised Portuguese fishermen by reducing the number of fishing days from 216 to 195.
