THE VILLAGE of Figueira, in the borough of Portimão, hosts the fourth Festival do Berbigão, (cockle festival) this weekend, September 9 and 10, at the Polidesportivo da Figueira (sports centre).
Visitors to this traditional event will be able to sample a variety of cockle dishes, such as Cockle Pasta, Cockles with Rice and Cockle Rissoles, and will also have the added pleasure of seeing the food cooked in front of them. The festival always proves popular, and this year’s venue boasts a seating capacity for 400 people.
This event is a tribute to the past, when the gathering and selling of cockles was a means of survival for many families in Figueira. To this day, the area still enjoys close links to the trade.
Doors open at 7pm and live music performances are given at 10pm each evening, with the event closing at 1am. Entrance costs 2.50 euros per person, including a small plate of cockles.
This event is organised by the Sociedade Recreativa Figueirense with support from Portimão Câmara and the Junta de Freguesia da Mexilhoeira Grande.
