Cloister sweets return to Lagoa

Lagoa’s Convento de São José is the ideal venue to host the 10th Mostra do Doce Conventual. This festival, from July 18 to 22, celebrates regional sweets based on traditional recipes from the convents.

The secrets of traditional cloister desserts and sweets won’t be unveiled but visitors to the event will be able to taste some of the best that Algarve gastronomy has to offer – its irresistible sweets  – in the sanctified atmosphere of the 18th century Lagoa convent.

Visitors will be able to taste a range of exquisite regional desserts and sweets from years gone by, including cakes, jams, honey and dried fruit based creations as well as medronho, Algarve wines from producers Adega Única and Quinta dos Vales, both located in the Lagoa council, and cherry liquor served in a chocolate cup.

The event, which takes place each evening from 6pm to 1am, will this year include, for the first time, a  presentation of sweets from Seville’s convents.

A full musical programme includes performances by José Malhoa (18), Micas Cabral (19), Lucky Duckies (20), Quina Barreiros (21) and Micaela (22), with all concerts starting at 10pm.

Other activities visitors will be able to enjoy include a live demonstration of bobbin lace work (Renda de Bilros) from Peniche and exhibitions about the history and myths surrounding Convento de São José and the patrimonial and archaeological heritage of Lagoa council.

Entry to the Mostra do Doce Conventual is free.
