VILA REAL de Santo António has been declared one of the cleanest places in Portugal, according to the National Clean Cities Awards 2008.
The award is given to the municipality by the ministry of the environment and the Portuguese association for sanitary engineering and the environment (APESB).
Vila Real de Santo António won the category of cleanest council with a population of between 10,000 and 20,000 inhabitants in recognition of the work undertaken by the local Câmara in managing urban waste in the area.
