Classical music in the Algarve

Two classical music concerts are being held this month at the Centro Cultural São Lourenço, near Almancil.

On Wednesday, October 20, Bucharest-born pianist Constantin Sandu will be performing Beethoven’s “Kreutzer” Sonata (Op. 47) and George Enescu’s Sonata Op. 6, among others.

Constantin Sandu has been resident in Portugal since 1991. After early studies, he obtained his doctorate at Bucharest Music University with a thesis on “Portuguese Music for Piano”.

His first appearance with an orchestra was at the age of 14 and he has since developed an intensive international and acclaimed concert career spanning three decades. Constantin has played in several festivals in France, Romania and Spain and has won several prizes.  He teaches at the Escola Superior de Música e das Artes do Espectáculo in Porto.

On Saturday, October 23, it will be violinist Horia Vacarescu’s turn to delight the audiences with music by Corelli, Chausson, Bártok and Schubert.

Horia Vacarescu is developing an international career as a soloist and chamber musician.  Horia was born into a musical family in Bucharest and started playing the violin when he was three. He now lives in London where he recently graduated from the Royal College of Music. Horia’s first public appearance was when he was six and first played with an orchestra when he was 15. He frequently plays with Romanian philharmonic orchestras and this year’s performances include those in Portugal, Hong Kong, Japan and the UK.
