Civil servants feel the pinch

Today’s the day (January 20) public sector workers feel the pinch of the government’s controversial wage cuts.
Civil servants receive their January salaries today with all the reductions outlined in the 2014 State Budget.
After three years of successive reductions for wages over €1,500, today all salaries over €675-a-month will be taking a cut of between 2.5% and 12%.
The budget imposes what the government calls a temporary but “progressive reduction” on the salaries of workers in public administration and State-owned enterprises, as well as those who hold senior posts in the public sector.
Politicians will also be facing lower incomes with an additional 5% cut.
Financial simulations by PricewaterhouseCoopers, a multinational professional services firm, show that the highest wages of the sector may see a 19% reduction when compared to 2010.
