Citizens to make Albufeira cigarette butt-free

A clean-up initiative aiming to clear Albufeira of cigarette butts is taking place in the town on Saturday (November 26) from 10am.

The event has been organised by animal association Pata Ativa with the help of Portugal4U – Events & Nature and Albufeira council.

“Cigarette butts are not biodegradable and are among the most common litter found in our urban environments,” says the association.

“It is estimated that 766 tonnes of cigarette butts wind up as toxic trash each year, creating enormous environmental, health, and economic strains,” it adds.

There will be prizes for volunteers who collect the most cigarette butts, and extra gifts for people who turn up as a family.

All material needed to collect the butts will be made available on the day.

The event is open to everyone, with the meeting point at Praia dos Pescadores.
