Cinema audiences up 75% in 2022

Portugal’s cinemas last year welcomed 9.5 million spectators and made €55.3 million in ticket sales, which increased by upwards of 75% from 2021, but still fell short of levels before the pandemic, the Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual has revealed today. In terms of box office revenues, the increase was 80%, from the 2021 total of €30.6 million. But compared to 2019, the year before the pandemic, recovery has been slow, with audiences still failing to cross the 10-million threshold, while back in 2019 there were 15.5 million viewers and €83.2 million in revenue.
