Christmas village in the east

Vila Real de Santo António (VRSA) is putting on a full programme of events for the festive season in a bid to attract visitors to the city and thereby boost business.

The inauguration of the ‘Christmas Village’ at Praça Marquês de Pombal on December 7 marked the beginning of the season, with many attractions expected to encourage shoppers to the historic city centre.

An initiative by the Câmara and the Algarve business association ACRAL, the ‘Christmas village’ will see many activities related to the season each day, including Father Christmas, a merry-go-round, inflatable castles, face painting, balloon modelling and pedal cars for children.

Another attraction is a snow tubing ramp, which promises to transform the main square into a winter sports centre, with visitors able to enjoy an adrenalin-filled ‘skiing’ experience on inflatable rings.

A giant nativity scene can be admired at the António Aleixo Cultural Centre from 9.15am to 7.45pm, while Christmas concerts will be held at the cultural centre on December 16 at 9pm and at Santa Rita Church on December 17 at 6pm and at Vila Real de Santo António Parochial Church at 7pm on the same day.
