Christmas shopping made simple

With Christmas around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about presents for family and friends. Not sure where to start? The Resident is here to help.

The firefighters from Lagoa Volunteer Bombeiros have launched a calendar. Each month features a photograph of a volunteer fireman in a different pose, from saving cats to carrying patients into an ambulance. The calendar costs five euros, with all the money raised donated to the Lagoa Bombeiros Fund. It is currently on sale at Lagoa Bombeiros headquarters on the EN125, the Endecken Sie Algarve office in Lagoa and at Halcion Cann (282 358 636).

If you’re looking for a calendar with a sense of humour, try the Donkey Girls calendar. It features Algarve women posing naked alongside some strategically placed donkeys. It costs 10 euros, all of which goes directly to the Associação Bamboo, at Quinta da Nossa Senhora at Guadalupe in Budens (reg number 506531856) – a charity for abandoned animals. The calendars are available from the Griffin Bookshop in Almancil (call 289 393 904), Baptista news stand in Luz, Pirata video shop on Rua Direita in Luz, the Bedspreads Factory Outlet in Alvor (282 457 510) and the Book Cellar in Carvoeiro (282 085 713). Call Nan Richardson on 282 788 345 or Brian on 282 788 115 for more information.

The perfect gift for those who are still struggling with the Portuguese language is Sheila Watts’ Practical Portuguese book and CD. The Resident is offering readers the book and CD set for just 18 euros (sold separately, they cost 10 euros each). Call Helen Berns on 282 342 936 for more information.
