Christmas in Portimão

Visitors to Portimão this month will be able to enjoy a vast programme of seasonal events.

Concerts

Tomorrow (Saturday), three Christmas concerts are being held. Quarteto do Barlavento will be playing compositions by Telemann, Mozart and Haydn at Alvor Igreja Matriz from 4pm, Andrés Villani (transverse flute) and Bruna Melia (cello) from the Duo Violino e Flauta are performing works by Bach, Vivaldi and Handel at Mexilhoeira Grande Church from 9pm, while at 9.30pm the Algarve Orchestra, under the direction of Sérgio Alapont, is taking to the stage at TEMPO playing works by Anton Webern (Langsamer Satz for String Quartet) and Beethoven’s Symphony nº3 among others.

On Sunday, the Portimonense Philharmonic Society is playing at TEMPO from 4pm, while on December 22, piano and vocal duo Carla Pontes and Jeferson Mello take to the stage at Casa Manuel Teixeira Gomes from 7pm.

Sleeping Beauty

A performance of Sleeping Beauty by the Russian Classical Ballet is taking place at the TEMPO Municipal Theatre in Portimão on December 23 at 9.30pm.

Based on the Charles Perrault tale, Sleeping Beauty is a two-act ballet written by Russian composer Tchaikovsky with choreography

by Petipa.

Markets

Meanwhile, at Alameda da Praça da República, by the main shopping street, a large tent has been put up with a variety of stalls selling anything from art to liquors and biological produce.

Until tomorrow (Saturday), traditional sweets, liquors and teas will be on sale, while on December 23, there will be a market selling natural and biological produce, and on December 30, an art fair.

The tent is open to the public from 10am to 7pm, with musical entertainment on the same days at 11am and at 3.30pm.
