Christmas markets, live music and much more planned
Christmas in Albufeira will be celebrated with a long list of events which promise to offer something for everyone.
Starting the festivities off this weekend (November 25 and 26) is ‘Guia Natal’, a Christmas market held near the local sports pavilion and organised by the Guia Parish Council. The event will feature exhibitors selling handicraft, toys, Christmas sweets and much more, as well as street entertainment, live music, carousels, bouncy castles and Santa’s House. Guia will also be showcasing its Street Native Scene, created by British sculptress Toin Adams, located between the Nossa Senhora da Guia Chapel and the Matriz Church.
Also included in the festive programme is Albufeira’s autumn fair ‘Feira Franca’, which this year will be held at a new location near the local marina between November 29 and December 3.. Visitors will be able to find all the usual attractions, from fun rides to merchants selling clothing, shoes, homeware, toys and much more.
December will begin with Albufeira’s ‘Mercadinho de Natal’, a Christmas market which will take place from December 1 to 3 between 2pm and 8pm at the Espaço Multiusos de Albufeira (EMA). Inside the venue there will be dozens of exhibitors selling Christmas decorations, traditional Algarve sweets, wines, liqueurs, cake and original handicraft items. One of the highlights promises to be the performance of the Rancho Folclórico de Albufeira on December 3 at 4pm.
The next event on the agenda will be the ‘Aldeia de Natal’ (Christmas Village), which between December 15 and 23 will turn the Engenheiro Duarte Pacheco Square into a “land of snow” filled with Christmas characters. “Satna Claus will be there listening to the dreams of every boy and girl, and the nice reindeer have already promised to get their hooves on the Ice Rink,” organisers say. There will also be stalls selling the usual Christmas-themed items,a wide range of activities aimed at children and an Escape Room, which will challenge teams to look for clues and solve puzzles in order to escape.
Several one-off events are also planned, such as a Christmas Concert by the Algarve Orchestra on December 15, at 9.30pm, at the Municipal Auditorium. The orchestra will be interpreting some of the most “luminous and uplifting” pieces by Bach and Handel. The concert will be free but tickets must be picked up on the day of the show at the auditorium between 8.30pm and 9.15pm.
Returning is the popular Santa Claus Race/Walk, which every year attracts around 800 participants. With the meeting point set for the Caliços Municipal Market at 10am on December 17, the event will challenge runners or walkers to take on a five or nine-kilometre route.
