The Algarve Tourism Board has announced a series of events for December which will bring 2021 to a close – from Christmas fairs to concerts and live shows, there is festive fun for everyone this month.
Some of the highlights are, of course, the many Christmas markets and fairs taking place across the region, including Portimão’s Mercadinho de Natal (December 1-23), which is inspired by the Christmas markets of the north of Europe. Vale do Lobo (December 4), Loulé (4), Cacela Velha (5), São Brás de Alportel (5) and Vila Vita Parc (18 and 19) will also be holding their own Christmas markets.
Meanwhile, local councils have also announced their festive events, many already featured in the Resident’s Christmas pages weekly.
For example, the Orquestra Clássica do Sul will be touring the Algarve for a series of Christmas concerts taking place in Albufeira, Moncarapacho, Quarteira and Silves between December 17 and 22. The Orquestra Ligeira de Lagos will also be performing at Lagos’ cultural centre on December 4.
Another highlight is the ‘Santons’ art exhibition by Ragnhild Olsen, who will be paying tribute to an old Christmas tradition from the Provence region of France by exhibiting ‘santons’ (small handmade clay figurines) created by several different artists. The exhibition will run until January 7 at Albufeira’s João Bailote gallery.
Meanwhile, the prestigious Moscow Russian Classical Ballet, led by famous ballerina Evgeniya Bespalova, is returning to Portugal for a live performance of the classic ballet ‘Sleeping Beauty’. The show is on December 12 at Lagoa’s Carlos do Carmo auditorium.
Motorsport fans will also have something to look forward to with the return of the Rallye Casinos do Algarve 2021, which will see the best drivers from every region in Portugal battling it out on local roads this weekend (December 4-5).
