Public sector workers have reason to celebrate today. Parliament has approved the elimination of the practice introduced by the last government of paying Portugal’s traditional “Christmas subsidy” in monthly tranches throughout the year.
Thus, next Christmas, many can expect a bumper end-of-year salary.
The move was powered by PS, Bloco Esquerda and PCP communists, with the PSD abstaining and the CDS-PP – which has just officially said goodbye to its longtime leader Paulo Portas – voting against.
