Christmas comes to Portimão

THE SPIRIT of Christmas is already evident in Portimão, following the switching on of the town’s Christmas lights recently, providing a festive atmosphere in the shopping areas and main streets, as well as in the freguesias of Mexilhoeira Grande and Alvor.

This is the fourth consecutive year that the council has contributed to the costs of the Christmas lights, representing an investment of 179,102 euros.

New for Christmas 2005 are the special lights in the Zona Ribeirinha (by the waterfront), put in place for the Portimão stage of the Lisboa-Dakar rally. Also new are the Christmas trees in Praça Manuel Teixeira Gomes, Alameda da Praça da República, Avenida V6, Mexilhoeira Grande crossroads and Montes de Alvor.

Plenty of Boas Festas (Happy Holidays) signs are placed at the entrances to Portimão and many lights are decorating the exterior of the Câmara building, the Igreja Matriz de Portimão and the Igreja da Misericórdia de Alvor.
