Choppy sea rescue off Algarve coast

Maritime rescue services scrambled in rough seas last Saturday to rescue an Ethiopian seaman off a chemical carrier, 75 kilometres west of Cape St Vincent.
The distress call came in from tanker Wappen Von Flensberg on Saturday afternoon, describing how a crew member had been taken ill. “He was complaining of bad stomach pains and needed to be taken to hospital,” ports authority captain Santos Pereira told the press.
Despite the worsening swell – with waves over two metres high – a launch set out from Ferragudo, reaching the ship in darkness and transferring the crewman onboard.
The man, 29, was rushed back to shore and is reportedly in stable condition at Portimão’s Barlavento hospital.
