Blackburn finally got their man in Mark Hughes to replace the departed Graeme Souness. The Wales manager took over with immediate effect, but will remain in charge of the World Cup qualifiers against England and Poland next month before relinquishing the national job. The usual candidates apart, Fulham’s Chris Coleman, Ian Rush and Bryan Flynn look to be strong candidates to succeed Hughes.
In Germany, Jupp Heynckes became the first casualty of the new season, three defeats in four games spelling the end of his tenure at heavy-spending Schalke, while Portugal’s Superliga has already claimed its fourth victim. Following Del Neri (Porto), Ulisses Morais (Estoril) and Manuel Cajuda (Maritimo), Manuel Fernandes has parted company with Penafiel. Luis Castro has replaced him.
