Lagoa gears up for top-notch live music this month
Music lovers are in for a treat this month in Lagoa, which will host the 22nd Lagoa Choir Week, the third Lagoa Piano Festival and a performance by Afro-Soul group Shirley Davis & The Silverbacks.
The Choir Week is organised by Ideias do Levante association and was created by José Carlos Bago d’Uva, who describes the event as “a time when Lagoa sings in four voices the enchantment of vocal polyphony across the lands of the Levante”.
Four live concerts are planned. Algarve choirs Jubilate Deo (Tavira) and Ideias do Levante (Lagoa) will begin the festivities at Lagoa’s Matriz church on Sunday (May 15) at 5pm.
Coral da Sociedade Filarmónica Silvense (Silves) will take the stage at the São José convent’s chapel on Wednesday, May 18 at 9pm, while female choir Outras Vozes will be joined by Ideias do Levante for a performance at Parchal church on Saturday, May 21 at 5pm.
The final performance will feature Bulgarian quartet Slavey, which will bring the event to a close at Carlos do Carmo auditorium on Sunday, May 22, at 5pm.
Also taking place is the Lagoa Piano Festival, which started on Sunday, May 8 with a performance by world-renowned pianist Artur Pizarro.
The festival’s second concert will feature jazz pianist Alexandre Dahmen, who will be presenting a combination of traditional American jazz tunes as well as some of his own songs at Mexilhoeira da Carregação church on May 15 at 6.30pm.
A week later (May 22), also at 6.30pm, pianist Cristina Silva and cellist Sunita Mamtani will bring the ‘Uma viagem sonora pela paixão’ (A sonic voyage through passion) recital to Porches church where they will interpret pieces by L.V. Beethoven, Sergei Rachmaninov and Frederico de Freitas.
The final concert on May 27 at Carlos do Carmo auditorium at 9pm will feature Ensemble Artis XXI, a musical collective bringing together invited musicians and teachers from Lagoa’s Art Conservatory.
Last but not least, the talented Shirley Davis & The Silverbacks group will bring its mix of Afro-Soul and Jazz music to the Carlos do Carmo auditorium on Friday, May 20 at 9pm. Considered by many to be “the new diva of European Soul”, singer Shirley Davis teamed up with The Silverbacks, the flagship band of Spanish label Tucxone Records, to create what is considered “one of the most exciting outfits of the contemporary scene”.
