Choir takes to stage for charity concert

A free holiday music concert will be held on Saturday, December 7 at the Pestana Vila Sol Golf & Holiday Resort Hotel in Vilamoura at 8pm. The inaugural concert is by the São Lourenço Singers and Joyce Whitelaw.

The music will consist of a variety of jazz and classical favourites, including songs such as Lullaby of Broadway, Over the Rainbow, White Christmas, Silent Night and many others.

The São Lourenço Singers was formed in January 2013. The choir consists of 30 singers from various European countries and it meets weekly for practice and fun.

Joyce Whitelaw, the choir director, said: “Choral singing builds character and develops discipline and confidence. Most of all, we share our love of music and have fun.”

Joyce creates all the vocal harmonies tailored to the mix, interests and abilities of the singers.

Joyce was born in Glasgow and graduated from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama with a dual degree: B.A. in Vocal and Piano Performance. She went on to obtain a diploma in Secondary Music Education from St. Andrews College of Education.

Joyce lived in San Francisco for 20 years where she taught music and was involved in a number of significant projects that included composing, management and performance. She has been living in Portugal for the past five years. She has given a solo concert to raise funds for the Lar de São Vicente in Albufeira and created a number of Portuguese songs using lyrics by a variety of Portuguese poets and writers.
