Chinese in Portugal to protest for “One united China”

The League of Chinese in Portugal has requested authorisation to hold a demonstration in Lisbon, in front of the United States embassy, on Monday August 22. Motivation is to show support for the “one China principle” – and opposition to the visit to Taiwan made recently by president of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi. Says the league, the visit “provoked insecurity and conflict in the Taiwan strait and region, and affronted the world consensus established by the United Nations to not interfere in the internal matters of countries. The “one China principle” is the premise and foundation for the establishment and development of diplomatic relations between China and the US, the league continues, suggesting it hopes to bring together 1,000 demonstrators to show strength of feeling against the US position over Taiwan.
