China’s vice president to visit Portugal

Han Zheng, the Chinese vice-president, is scheduled for a working visit to Lisbon between May 7-10. The trip follows the recent official visit made by Macau leader Ho Iat Seng. Zheng has also been chosen to represent China – in place of president Xi Jin Ping – for the coronation of King Charles III on May 6 – an arrangement that has inflamed politicians, on the basis that Zheng is seen the man responsible for trashing the international treaty with Hong Kong – in the course of which Hong Kong authorities have “persecuted peaceful democracy campaigners” (this criticism from former Tory leader Ian Duncan-Smith).
