China in their hands

Brothers and fellow Algarve golf pros Ricardo and Hugo Santos teamed up for the first time since their amateur days to represent Portugal at the European World Team Cup qualifying tournament in Talinn, Estonia, at the weekend.

The siblings started with a respectable three-under-par opening round of 69 and followed up with a solid 71 to move into seventh place on day two.

Having found their length, spectacular hitting then saw the pair produce an eleven-under-par 61 on Saturday to all but secure a place at China’s Mission Hills course come November.

The Algarveans did not let that opportunity slip, a calm par performance on the final day making sure of the third qualifying spot behind Austria and Holland.

“It helped that we are brothers,” an elated Ricardo said afterwards. “We know each other’s game like no-one else does.

Hugo added: “I represented Portugal as an amateur but this was the first time as a professional and it is fantastic!”
