China found it first!

The Algarve Archaeological Association is holding a special book reading and talk by Gavin Menzies, author of the best selling book, 1421 – The Year China Discovered the World.

Menzies is a retired nuclear submarine commander who spent 20 years researching a book that has shaken previous assumptions regarding the discovery of the modern world. His well-documented thesis claims that it was the Chinese that circumnavigated the globe a century before Magellan, reached America 70 years before Columbus, and Australia 350 years before Cook.

The book has been described as “a brilliant epoch-making work of historical detection that radically alters our understanding of world exploration and rewrites history itself”.

Naturally, the great age of Portuguese discoveries plays a major role in Gavin Menzies’ research and he has visited Portugal and the Algarve on several occasions. He will be speaking at the Biblioteca Municipal in Loulé, at 2.30pm, and then at the Convento São José in Lagoa, at 6.30pm, on Tuesday November 2.

Non-members are welcome for a fee of five euros. For more information, call 289 992 466.
