Child “shot in head by angry father” in Lisbon

An eight-year-old child was shot in the head with a 6.35 mm pistol as he tried to protect his mother from his gun-wielding father in Lisbon yesterday (Sunday) afternoon.

The child was hit in the “eyebrow”, say reports, and his injuries are not life-threatening.

While he spent the night in hospital, both his parents were arrested.

The father faces charges for attempted murder, while the mother was also led away in handcuffs, writes Correio da Manhã, due to the “aggressive manner” in which she reacted once police arrived.

It is not immediately clear whether the mother will be facing charges, but the father is due to be presented before a magistrate later today.

Said neighbours in the family’s apartment block in Rua Maria Pia, the family was known for its conflicts, but no-one ever expected an outburst like this one.

No one even knew that the 51-year-old husband owned a gun, Rafael Carvalho told CM.

According to SIC television news, the father suffers from “reduced mobility”.

All reports have explained that he was aiming for his 45-year-old wife when he mistakenly hit his son.
