Child mauled by dog

A PORTUGUESE toddler, who was attacked by a Rottweiler in Loulé last Thursday (February 14), was transferred out of the intensive care unit at Faro hospital on Tuesday.

The 20-month-old girl was seriously injured in the attack by a pet, which made large bite marks in her head and face, at the family’s residence in Soalheira, Loulé.

She had been leaving the family home with a grandparent when the dog attacked. It is believed that the toddler was crying and this is what had triggered the dog  to strike.

She was rushed to hospital where neurosurgeons and plastic surgeons operated on her for several hours. She is now recovering in the paediatric ward at the hospital.

The dog, which has been described by family members as a docile creature, was taken away from the house by the GNR and is being held in Loulé Kennels.

In the next week, following a period of quarantine, the national veterinary authority (Direcção-Geral de Veterinária) will determine whether the dog will be put down.

The family still has two other Rottweilers at their home and it is unknown whether they will keep them.
