A 10-year-old boy died in a tragic accident after getting off the bus to go to school in Ponta Delgada, Azores, on Monday morning.
According to Correio da Manhã newspaper, the boy’s backpack got stuck in the bus doors and he was left hanging as the vehicle drove off.
The newspaper reports that the child managed to free himself only to fall into the road and be run over by one of the bus’ rear tyres.
By the time Ponta Delgada rescue services had arrived, Rodrigo Medeiros had already gone into cardiac arrest, with multiple traumatic injuries.
He was taken to Ponta Delgada Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The bus driver also had to be hospitalised in a state of shock.
Ponta Delgada PSP police are now investigating, trying to work out how the bus driver could have been unaware that a passenger was wedged between the vehicle’s doors.
