Child abuse

MEMBERS OF the Polícia Judiciária (PJ) were in Lisbon for the third European conference on missing and sexually abused children.

Organised by the Instituto de Apoio à Criança (IAC), the conference revealed that the penalisation of culprits involved in cases of child abduction and abuse were not sufficient according to the PJ.

Although missing children are reported constantly, both the IAC and the PJ were in agreement that the vast majority of the cases are of children over 14 years old who have voluntarily left home, usually in the summer months.
