EARLIER THIS week, we were alerted to a new, potentially crippling scam involving cheque fraud.
A cheque that has been sent abroad by post can be intercepted and scanned. The copied cheque looks real enough, with signatures exactly duplicated, but the security numbers have been altered and, more worryingly, the values of the cheques changed, producing a fraudulent copy for a greater amount than the original, looking just like the real thing.
To be on the safe side, The Resident urges its readers to either send cheques by registered post or use bank transfers instead, and to check statements to ensure your cheques have gone through correctly.
