CHEGA’s party congress prompts PS leader into attack mode

Pledges coming out of this weekend’s congress of right wing CHEGA have prompted PS leader Pedro Nuno Santos going onto the attack, accusing the party of ‘promising the impossible’. CHEGA has pledged to resurrect the Nationality Law (allowing Sephardic Jews to claim Portuguese citizenship), reinstate borders and foreigners agency SEF, and ensure all teachers are paid what they are owed in ‘time frozen’ within four years. Commentators have said that aside from promising “mind boggling things”, CHEGA leader André Ventura “went straight to people’s problems with a language people can understand”. But, calling the congress “a congress of lies”, Pedro Nuno Santos said CHEGA’s promises “have the unique objective of seducing those who are discontent, those who are angry”, without offering what he believes are ‘solutions’.
