A candidate for right wing party Chega in the recent municipal elections has been briefly detained by police for “strong indications of the practice of attempted murder” due to “racial hatred”. The incident took place in the borough of Moura – and the victims were a family of Swedish citizens, travelling with their seven children in a caravan. The father, “of African descendence” had an ‘altercation’ with the suspect, who apparently pursued the family in his own vehicle, firing shots at them. The suspect has been presented to authorities and freed on bail. Chega’s political leader André Ventura – himself taking up a position within the borough council – has spoken out to distance the party from “crimes that involve attempts against human life or the physical integrity of third parties”.
