Only two Algarvean chefs have ever picked up the title of ‘Chefe Cozinheiro do Ano’, and on May 18, they joined forces to create an exceptional gourmet dinner at the Morgadinho restaurant at Suites Alba Resort & Spa.
Louis Anjos, executive chef of the resort in Albandeira and winner of the 2012 title, invited fellow ‘Chef of the Year’ and former colleague Tiago Bonito, from the Vilalara Thalassa Resort, to showcase a winning menu, with wine pairing from the Alentejo wine-producer Herdade do Rocim.
It was a full house, with diners delighting in six delicious dishes created by the chefs and their teams. From the visually stunning appetiser of mackerel, crab and lemon, prepared on slate by hosting chef Louis, and the duck egg, asparagus and truffles, through to the fish dish of turbot and shiitake mushrooms, and the trilogy of lamb, the menu showcased both chefs’ strengths and styles whilst still blending seamlessly as a single gastronomic dinner.
The orange sorbet, which accompanied the white chocolate and pistachio dessert, was a highlight for many.
No doubt enhanced by the chefs’ rapport, there was a good-natured atmosphere in the kitchen, something that chef Louis Anjos hopes to repeat in a second event that will take place in June. CRISTINA ALCOCK
