Cheese tester insures his nose for five million

A cheese tester, who uses his expert sense of smell to select 12,000 tonnes of cheddar every year, has insured his nose for five million pounds sterling.

The master cheese grader, Nigel Pooley, 63, has worked at his family-run Wyke Farms in Somerset for the past 12 years.

His nose will be insured by Lloyds of London and he has said that it is incredibly important for his nose to be insured as his company earn one million pounds a week by selecting and saving the best cheddar.

As Mr Pooley is the only worker that does this job for the whole company, they need to make sure they can cover their loss.

Jonathan Thomas, group accident and health underwriter of Watkins Syndicate at Lloyd’s, said Mr Pooley had broken new ground as their first ‘cheese nose’.
