Charity summer ball for Rod

A summer ball is being held at A Colina Hotel in Almancil on September 5 to help raise funds for a life-saving kidney transplant for British resident Rod Smyth.

The evening’s entertainment will include a comedy stint from British actor Clive Dunn, a silent auction, live music from Luxarma Zen, a finalist group of the national music competition Mais Música, and a disco.

A three-course meal will be prepared by the former head chef from the Savoy in London and owner of A Colina Hotel, Lee Newsome, Jonnie Pratt (see article below), chef at Bistro des Z’Artes and Riz Vakht from O Pelicano Indian restaurant, all in Almancil.

This meal, which will start from 7pm with Pimms on the terrace, will include a cold buffet starter with a variety of dishes such as honey baked ham, cold poached whole salmon, onion bhajis, samosas, prawn and avocado salad. For main course, there will be a whole roast hog, rib eye rolls and fillets of sea bream or chicken curry, with a variety of side dishes. Desserts include fruit platters, chef’s cheesecake, gulab jamun and cheese.

“The generosity of the team of chefs involved means that almost all of the proceeds from the ticket sales will go towards the fundraiser,” said Rod’s wife Touchelle Smyth.

A special offer on wine for the evening will also allow guests to pre-purchase Algarve wines.

A case of 12 in advance will cost 10 euros per bottle, six bottles in advance will cost 12 euros per bottle and on the night a single bottle will be 15 euros.

Tickets, which cost 40 euros per person and include a welcome drink, dinner, soft drinks and entertainment, are limited to 200 places. To book, please contact Kate Rouse by email at

Meanwhile, Touchelle has already raised more than 25,000 euros of the minimum 30,000 euro target (see the Algarve Resident edition, March 13).

Any funds not used directly for Rod’s operation and living expenses in the UK will be split between charities in the UK and Portugal as both countries have contributed massively to Rod’s wellbeing.
