A golf tournament in honour of Dave Ling, a beloved member of the Burgau Sports Centre who passed away recently from leukemia, is taking place on Thursday, July 4 at Santo António golf in Budens, Vila do Bispo.
Lingy, as he was known by his friends, owned a house in Praia da Luz with his wife Angelika Ling, who he met when they both worked for sports brand Adidas.
“Dave had been playing in our society for almost three years and had become a big personality due to his very dry sense of humor,” Dan Robinson from the Burgau Sports Centre told us.
He added: “He was also a great sportsman, with a background in rugby and cricket in the UK, a fierce competitor, but he also had a very good etiquette. He was a very well presented and proud man, but most humble and gracious in defeat. We miss him dearly.”
The ‘Dave Ling Memorial Trophy’ aims not only to pay tribute to him but also raise money for the Nightingale Macmillan Unit, based within the Royal Derby Hospital, where Dave was treated. The goal is to raise €1,000.
“When he fell ill, he went through various treatments but, unfortunately, mild leukemia took him from us.
“He never wanted us to see how he looked and kept his illness very much to himself. His wife Angie would message me about his status. But when nothing could be done to save him, I asked her to tell him about the memorial trophy we would organise in his honour,” he added.
The tournament is already completely booked but you can contact Dan if you would like to attend or help the fundraising effort.
The Texas Scramble tournament will include prizes for “1st, 2nd and 3rd places, nearest the pins and longest drive”.
