Charity Golf Challenge at the Monte Rei Golf and Country Club

Saturday, August 30 will see the 2nd Annual Charity Golf Challenge taking place at the Monte Rei Golf and Country Club, the only Jack Nicklaus signature course in Europe.
The event, in aid of the Algarve Oncology Association (AOA), is organised by the Rotary Club Estoi Palace International (RCEPI) together with Blacktower Financial Management Group, and supported by the Algarve Resident newspaper and Golfino, Europe’s leader for fashionable golf wear.
The organisers have many reasons to want to support the work of the AOA.
The association is staffed principally by volunteers and 2014 marks their 20th year of outstanding service to the community. Originally organised to provide support to breast cancer patients in advanced stages of the disease, over the years the AOA has expanded to include counselling and medical treatment to all cancer patients, as well as providing information and education for the general public.
The association opened the first radiotherapy facility south of Lisbon in the city of Faro in 2006. Fundraising is already underway to construct Casa Flor das Dunas, to offer accommodation for out-of-town patients receiving treatment at the radiotherapy centre.
In 2005, the AOA implemented mobile breast cancer screening in the Algarve, in partnership with the Regional Health Administration, travelling into rural communities to reach women who could not make the journey to regional centres for the government-sponsored cancer screening.
Now, nine years later, the AOA hopes to modernise their programme and lower the initial screening age from age 50 to 45 to save even more lives. There is an ambitious project now in the planning stages that would combine the latest technology with an updated data centre that, if implemented, could reach an additional 12,000 to 13,000 women in the Algarve.
The programme for the day at the Monte Rei Golf and Country Club includes pre-game access to practice facilities, a Continental buffet breakfast, escort to your starting hole for a 9.30am shotgun start, 18 holes of golf in this exclusive course with stunning surroundings, BBQ lunch, competition prizes, optional raffle and an auction.
The cost is €135 per player. If you are interested in registering yourself, or your group, call 967 226 280.
